Itineraries

Apulia offers to the lovers of the nature a climatic scenery and a suggestive and varied imagery: the azure sky, the splendour of the sun, the enchantment of the sea.
It has an outstanding historical, artistic and religious inheritance which goes from the Magna Greece to the Byzantine period, to the Norman-Suevian period, to the Baroque. A point of honour in Apulia is its typical pure, tasty cuisine.
All provinces of Apulia are easy to reach from Polignano, an atmospheric base for exploring the surrounding area.

The province of BARI
Romanesque cathedrals and majestic castles from Frederick II, megalithic monuments and the sea air are the most interesting touristic-cultural attractions in the province of Bari.
Fantastic and, at the same time, inviting are the grottoes scenery and the unique “trulli”.
In this area, you have to see: Castel del Monte (Andria), Barletta, Trani, Bari, Polignano a Mare, Castellana Grotte, Alberobello.

The province of BRINDISI
The archeological ruins and Egnatia excavations on the Adriatic sea give way to views of the sea and wide stretches of sand. Inland, hills where some important tourist centres are situated: among its fruitful olive-trees, Fasano and the Zoo Safari, a corner of Africa where fierce beasts and many other animals live in freedom; Ostuni that offers the visitor an incomparably lovely, imaginative scene in its neat, chalk-whitened historical town; Oria with its superb castle. The capital Brindisi has in its harbour a bridge out-stretched towards Greece and the nearby East, of which it conserves important vestiges.

The province of FOGGIA
The Umbrian forest, the lakes of Lesina and Varano, the imposing sanctuaries of St. Michele in Monte St. Angelo and that of St Giovanni Rotondo, where the remains of Padre Pio lie, are the main touristic-cultural attractions of this area which includes the enchanting Tremiti Islands and the old towns of Lucera, Troia and Manfredonia, rich in history and monuments.

The province of LECCE
Lecce, the Baroque capital, possesses great, unusually elegant monuments: S. Croce, the Duomo Square, the St. Niccolò and Cataldo and St. Matthew churches, and the Amphitheatre and Roman Theatre. In the country there are many towns filled with history and art with stupendous scenery: Otranto with its cathedral and the floor life-tree mosaic; Gallipoli with its old centre and beaches; Santa Cesarea with her spas; Porto Cesareo and S. Maria di Leuca, the toe of Italy. The prehistoric grottos of Porto Badisco, Zinzulusa and Romanelli are some of the other most important points of touristic-cultural interest.

The province of TARANTO
Its city, its roads recall the old monuments of the Hellenic civilization which was here and which reappears in mute testimonies through the archeological remains preserved in the National Museum of Taranto. It is the city of two seas and a revolving bridge, whose historical centre harbours medieval palaces of notable architectural interest. In the country, particularly interesting historically and artistically are the towns of: Grottaglie with its fine ceramics, Martina Franca with its Baroque palace and its stupendous balcony facing the fascinating Itria Valley; the Messapian Manduria, rich in old monuments, Massafra, perched on the gorge of the same name in the center of a vast area of rock-settlements (see also Mottola); Castellaneta and Ginosa on the Ionian sea, with verdant, dense pinewoods which form a crown around spacious, extremely long sandy beaches.
